On curiosity

curiosity makes you go on tiptoes
curiosity makes you go on tiptoes~ shanghai

It is curiosity that makes each day different to the one before, the search for new stimuli, the interest in what is hidden and unseen, the search for something intriguing, the things that makes us go exploring. Most books and researches point to curiosity as a brain function and an instinct that we share with apes and other animals, but I wonder if it isn’t so much more in humans. I wonder if it is not connected to our innate drive to search for the unknown and to be with the unseen. Losing it or ignoring it would be almost like giving up our mission for personal development for the comforts and certainty of the already known.

Day 15~ September 15th~ Tuscany

the seen and the unseen

How often does it happen to you that you are in museum looking at art and you notice people going first to the little cards or papers that hold a description about the art and reading it before even looking at what it describes? By doing that, don’t we prejudge an artwork and fill ourselves with another person’s impression and facts that end up closing us to the natural way of being with something? Aren’t there two parts of us (at least) that can register new impressions? Don’t we register things consciously with our senses while another unseen part of us takes it in in a whole other manner that we cannot consciously comprehend? Wouldn’t it be better to give ourselves the chance first to detect art before filling our heads with information?

Day 30~ June 30th~ Xinjiang

farewell from Xinjiang

Being a lover of travel, you learn to get yourself used to enduring the pain of separation. When you travel to a new place it is not just the people, the buildings, the nature and the food that you meet, but also the essences that live in that place and those are the things you end up missing the most. The very subtle things that you don’t see with your eyes, but only feel, can be with as they come together to make up the version of that part of the earth and imprint it in your mind.

As all journeys must end, so does this month’s adventure into the beautiful world that is Xinjiang. It was a very enjoyable but a difficult month for me in terms of finding the 30 images to show you from the 4000 in my files. There is so much more that remains unseen and so many stories that remain untold.

But on to the next…

Day 3~ March 3rd~ Egypt

Ka (ancient wooden statue with out-stretched set of arms above the head at the Cairo museum)

While searching and researching inside the realms of Ancient Egypt, the unseen comes into focus as the seen gradually gets blurred…

The ancient Egyptians believed that each person hosted in themselves a double, an electrical entity that ushered and guided them towards their true destiny. They called it the Ka. Their Ka was to live beyond the death of their physical bodies and mummifications served as preparations for homes that the Ka would one day return to inhabit.

Their lives were lived in great discipline as to remain pure and adhere to purpose because any deviation from purpose was an abomination of the Ka.

What was most haunting for me standing in front of this statue was the look in its eyes. It was the kind of look that can take you on a journey, far beyond where you would normally be.
