After 5 days of being around these beautiful people in the mountains of Yunnan’s Honghe area, my two traveling companions and I realized that we had not seen a single other foreigner around since our arrival, and we knew that we and our ways must appear so strange to the locals. I had brought a small polaroid camera with me to offer small photos as gifts, and to my utter surprise, most of the older people had no idea that the photos were theirs. They would look at the photo after taking it from me, look at, smile and give it back wondering why I was showing them these people printed on the paper. It was so brilliant and such a great privilege to witness a culture still separated from modernism and its grip.

Day 15~ October 15th~ Yunnan
Like old friends they walked down the mountain road, a man and his helper, friends after years of long lonely walks, man and bull finding a common language, because that is what happens when closeness heralds warmth between planetary beings.
Day 13~ October 13th~ Yunnan
Children, no matter what we expect, plan, project and wish for in them, their futures are blank pages as far as we are concerned. We are unable to control what they will become, who they were meant to be and the things they are destined to accomplish. Despite our blindness to the theaters of their future, every action we take can affect them in their vulnerability. One would hope and pray that most of us act wisely.
Day 12~ October 12th~ Yunnan
Do you remember the last time you laughed with all of your heart while shuffling papers at work in your office? Does the stress in our lives allow us the luxury of a real body shaking laugh? Simple people who lead simple lives have the precious access to simple happiness, the best kind of happiness there is. When we have so little to lose, there is so much less to worry about and the sound of our laughter is lighter, more musical and has the ability to get reflected in our eyes.
Day 11~ October 11th~ Yunnan
Do you ever wonder who you are, where you came from and what your real purpose for being on this planet is? Do you ever question life’s most confronting mysteries, and those questions that no one has ever been able to give you a reasonable answer to? It is a haunting that makes life seem as though it hangs somewhere on a cloud between reality and dreams. Sometimes seeing another person’s face and looking into their eyes can cause all these questions to flood back into my mind begging for answers.
Have a peaceful weekend…
Day 10~ October 10th~ Yunnan
Every line is a story, every crease an event, every downward wrinkle a tragedy and every upward one a joy lived. We are all on roads that have ups and downs and our faces are there to tell our tales.
Day 8~ October 8th~ Yunnan
There once was a man who spoke with his hands, he made gestures for sounds and movements for words and together we had an unforgettable conversation~ Dayangjie~ Yunnan
Day 7~ October 7th~ Yunnan
When a child is sick or unwell, the only thing it craves is the warm touch of a parent or family member. We are creatures that thrive on warmth and human contact makes us tingle. This fact begs the question: what will be come of us when our lives become more and more digital and virtual and will Siri’s calm cold voice be enough to serenade a child to sleep?
In Yunnan I only saw children attached to family members while they walked, worked, cooked and these children were strong, confident and loved. I will take a hug over a text message any day.
Day 3~ October 3rd~ Yunnan
Have you ever been scrutinized by innocence? Has a child ever looked straight through you, cutting through the layers of your assumed identity to strip you down to the bare truth of who you really are? Children are not yet trained in our adult games of hiding behind borrowed personalities and when they look at us they ‘see’ us.
