Xitang~ An Old Water Town

A 90 minute drive from the bustling Shanghai Metropolis, lies one of several old water towns where life carries on with a completely different rhythm. Water has this way of slowing things life down to a gentle meander, and it magically transforms reality into gentler ripples of dream like visions. Blue and soft in nature, it allows for a place in oneself of deep contemplation. The old walls seem as thought they are speaking to the visitors, telling tales of times that have been and predicting the tales that will inevitable come to be.

We are born, we live, we journey through life from event to event, we witness other travelers arriving, others leaving, we wonder where they came from, where are they going to, we search history books, we seek religion, we question science, we hope to hear any truth, any certainty from a wise sage, we pray to what we consider to be a higher force, we test our belief, we question reality, and we never really get THE answer we are looking for. All we get are more questions and a realization that our journey is only but a part of a much bigger one packed full of mystery and the answers lie within us to discover, maybe not here and not now, but somewhere sometime…

There is a special bond between a child and his grandparent that is most often glued by a strong tenderness, a powerful love and a kind of friendship that is only possible between these alternate generations. It is as though they are closer to each other being at each end of the circle of life, each yearning and longing to be with the other.

In China this bond is celebrated in almost every family, where the grandparents volunteer to become a very strong presence, care givers and friends to their grandchildren.
