Real Life Paused~ India

_Y9A5798-Edit

After having travelled to faraway places, they become part of you. Their people, the colors, the smells, the feelings and emotions that define each place are always at hand ready to reconnect you to that place in a split second. It is the most amazing thing. And with photography: that connection is instantaneous. A frozen moment like this of  3 girls in a New Delhi slum comes to life and buzzes with feeling when I connect to it once again. And isn’t life a continuous stream of such frozen moments?

Spirited~ India

_Y9A4283-Edit

When you love photography and have the tugging urge to travel the world and see as many humans as you can, you end up staring into so many different faces. Some of these faces are simply unforgettable. This girl had a strength of spirit that radiated out of her as she stood there defiantly and curiously questioning the stranger in her village. She stood her ground and all I could do was smile in awe.

One of so many stories along the way…

Day 31~ August 31st~ Boracay

farewell to Boracay

Boracay is a place you leave and always dream of going back to, to its ocean, to its skies, to its lively skies and mostly to its warm people and the girl with the yellow balloon. This ends this month’s journey into the litte paradise island of the Philippines. On to the next!

Day 19~ May 19th~ Cambodia

playing at home

Her little home is built on stilts, her bed is a mattress on the floor, her feet are bare, her dreams are of faraway places,  her toy is a red balloon, she holds on to it for dear life…

Day 13~ May 13th~ Cambodia

the little girl in Ta Prohm

Finding yourself in a temple like Ta Prohm with its mysterious stone structures, the large banyan trees that are reclaiming the architecture and devouring it back into the earth is a kind of mystical experience. I was there wandering between the ancient walls when I heard a rustle behind the trees, I looked over and I saw a beautiful pair of eyes following me around. I approached slowly and a slow exchange began to happen between the little girl who owned those eyes and me. The hesitancy gradually gave way to smiles, the distrust to trust and we ended up walking together silently. At the end of my visit, the little fairy of Ta Prohm granted me the chance of a portrait to treasure for years to come.

Day 29~ March 29th~ Egypt

boys in abayas

As I come close to the end of this journey back into Egypt I have to carefully choose the last 3 images I want to share with you. Temples, artifacts, artwork, that can all be seen in books, on websites, it has all been recorded again and again, but the people of Egypt, the human element, this is what I value the most in my photos from that time.

The faces of these boys, dressed in their traditional abayas, as they stood there back in 1996, would never have looked the same again. The magic of street photography is in capturing a fleeting moment that is natural, spontaneous and cannot be replicated.

So yes, I will leave  you with people’s images in the last 3 posts perhaps to balance the imposing starkness and coldness of Egypt’s architecture and art.

Day Two Hundred Seven, August 17, 2011

the end of a summery day

Do you remember those days of summer when you were so young that worries could never find you? Do you remember your little projects of mud pies, berry picking, swimming, running around barefoot all day long, playing hide and seek, splashing in puddles, making fairy gardens, creating your own ice cream with all sorts of bizarre ingredients and living the moment with no static from the past or future to disturb your peace? I remember these days through watching my child as she and her clothes get stamped with a day fully lived.
