The Gift That Holds Us~

Rain falls quietly on the old stone bridge in Qibao, as the figure under the umbrella becomes part of the story of the place. The droplets draw lines on the umbrella’s surface, each one marking time, memory, and a quiet persistence. I’ve always been drawn to rain—not just the way it transforms the landscape, but the feeling it evokes. There’s something about walking into that atmosphere with a camera that feels like slipping into another state, where the world speaks in tones softer and deeper than usual.

Photography has had a hold on me for nearly three decades now. It doesn’t let go, and I don’t ask it to. It’s a daily presence—sometimes subtle, sometimes loud—and even when I’m not holding a camera, the world continues to frame itself before my eyes. This image reminded me of that presence. I didn’t chase it—it found me. And in that mutual agreement, there’s a consistency that’s not effort but gift. For anyone who has such a force in their life, it’s a quiet kind of freedom, a path already drawn.

That path, though, isn’t meant to end with us. The purpose of the gift is in the sharing, in the way it moves from hand to eye to heart. I believe photography is not a mirror for myself—it’s a conversation, an offering. It speaks to others and hopefully stirs something, even if just for a breath.

Today also holds a note of sorrow. The passing of Sebastiao Salgado, a master of this language, brings with it a heavy reverence. His images didn’t just show—they shifted sentiment, revealed injustice, honored the Earth. He stood firmly in that space between art and impact, and because of that, he will be missed by many and remembered by more. His work is a reminder of what photography can be when it carries purpose, and that too is a gift—to all of us.

RIP🙏🏻

  1. Salgado was a sensei. The age of older brothers. So many cruel despots hold the news today… Better remember the man under the umbrella.
(You are selecting amazing pictures lately… Tous mes compliments et merci.)
