Day 17~ March 17th~ Egypt

two boys, the nile and a leaky boat

Moments with other people, they are the holders of the best of memories…

We were near Aswan, our boat drifting lazily in the January sun, the Nile river glowing with thousands of bright sequins, when we made a small pause near the shore. There, near the bank of the river were 2 boys, one of them I spoke to for a while, his name was aalaa (علاء). He had this little home made boat that he was so proud of and he used it to cross the Nile from his village to the neighboring one. He was transporting his friend who helped row the boat with his arms while aalaa used a tin can to scoop the water accumulating slowly in the bottom of their leaky boat. It was a small sketch of their daily life that stayed with me, and that drew so much endearment from me to them. Sometime it is the simplicity of life that makes it so extraordinary and the tiny things that make it so special.

Day Three Hundred Sixty Two, January 19, 2012

broken

I have been thinking a lot lately about children and the process of growing up. My daughter is 7 and she is a dreamer, a total believer in the magic of life, in fairies, in angels, in the unusual and special things about life. As she gets schooled and gradually grows older, some of her beliefs will get beaten to the ground and deemed silly, childish and unreal. I dread that day that is sure to come to at least some parts of her magical life and I pray that she may gather some of this sparkle to keep for herself in a special place somewhere, because how dull is a life without magic?

Day Three Hundred Eight, November 26, 2011

color sparkles

Color, we marvel at it in the sky, in rainbows, in butterflies, in the ocean, in the trees, in fruits,… all around us. We use it in fashion, in style, in homes, in crafts, in food art, in painting, and it becomes part of our identity. But at some point, the use of color was medicinal, esoteric, influential in human life, ceremonial, religious, purposeful, significant, meaningful and exact. It is amazing to try taking just a moment every morning to look at a spectrum of colors (pencils, pantone colors, whatever) and see which one you are most drawn to that day, because it really is different each day, and to try and learn something about that color, be on the frequency of it. It is no coincidence that flags are certain colors and that most religions are color coded, or is it?
