Istanbul Shadow Stories~

On this trip, I was chasing the light as most street photographers do, to experience the extraordinary dimensions that it gives to ordinary life moment.

Istanbul in the early morning, sunset or even high noon can look quite magical through the lens. It’s a city of almost 18 million residents, bustling with life, energy and that little extra something unique to it… every photographer’s dream.

I am on my last morning here and already planning a trip back in the future, inshalla…

Theater of life~

Life in the street is a theater happening all the time, constantly changing and metamorphosing that I feel compelled to be out there capturing as many moments as I can. Every image I capture makes me think that had a slept longer it would never have been captured. I imagine this must be every street photographer’s dilemma.

The magic of shadows~

When you do a lot of street photography you find yourself constantly chasing shadows, becoming an expert on light, time of day, season and brightness analysis until sometimes you just gasp and jump in the middle of a conversation because you saw a shadow worth capturing. Sometimes it even borders on stalking 😊.

In distant dreams~

I was going through my archives of hundreds of thousands of photographs as one often does, when I came across this image of my daughter when she was 4 years old running through the cedars of Lebanon and it made me catch my breath. She is now 13, and time has tricked us all again. How relentless it is, never pausing, never letting us catch our breath. It is always later than we think, isn’t it? So many unrealized intentions, how does one keep up with life, or should we at all?

Pausing and dreaming today in the moment of what was, what is and what will be…

In the speed train that is our lives, it feels so good to make a pause, survey the terrain, look at where we have been, evaluate the journey traveled so far and decide on the direction of our next steps.

Today was a one of reconnecting with friends that I was never really disconnected from. Time and distance vanish at moments like these and only the value of a good relationship stands out at the end of the day.

And along the way I got to explore Industry City and Greenwood Cemetery, both places most definitely worthy of a long walk in the chill of a sunny winter day.
