Daily Coffee Talk~ 85/365

The world around us is always changing, every second could bring a new outcome, could cause a new future to onset. What are we in control of? Only our choices, in the now.

Europe feels so turbulent at this time and that unsettlement, I feel echoed in me. I feel the shockwaves of the despair and fear inside of those facing the unfortunate aggression going on in the Ukraine, and the human in me has a very hard time separating from the pain of other humans at this time.

So I keep pressing on with art, with trying to stay creative and feeling the immense value of having a space where peace can still exist. Every new day feels like a new opportunity and the only way I can help is by remembering human purpose in defiance of those who oppress and who take away from the innocent.

Let’s pray again and again for peace so that life and art can have a chance in shaping our future.

blurred shadow~ New York

Why is it that our memories fade and blur like shadows of what has been, and only moments of passion and pain remain vivid in our minds?

Day Three~ February 3rd~ Lebanon

martyrs' square

“The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.” Khalil Gibran

Designed by the Italian sculptor Renato Marino Mazzacurati and placed in downtown Beirut in 1960, this statue stands witness to the horrors of the civil war in Lebanon with its many bullet holes that are left as a reminder of what has been. On this very square a revolt against the occupying Turks resulted in the hanging of some of Lebanon’s best intelectual figures in 1916.

War, pain and struggle have had a permanent home in Lebanon throughout history and when you hear that you would expect to meet sad and broken people. But somehow Lebanese people come out on the other side of the spectrum, the joyful side. Love of life rules the day and happiness bubbles in their hearts and explodes in their faces transforming them into smiling phoenixes that rise again and again from the ashes of disaster.

There is a magical way about Lebanese people that can simply make you addicted to them, to the country, to the land, and to their bright faces.

Day Three Hundred Two, November 20, 2011

patched up

One of the greatest kindnesses that went into our creation as humans is the ability to forget pain. Without that, no woman would ever have another baby after her first, we would never dare fall in love again and we would never run after our first fall. Yes, we are able to forget pain and it gets archived into our memories as as small pang and nothing more. But the scars, they remain. Don’t you have scars that always draw a story out of you? Aren’t some of these wounds coated with nostalgia and some bitter-sweetness? Don’t we look at them with an almost sense of endearment?
