Europe loves its Christmas Markets, the festive mood, the warm drinks cuddled by cold hands, the delicious smells of roasted almonds and the magical lights that chase away the darkness of winter. From the first advent till the winter solstice, people try to spend as much time as possible out in the markets calling on hope, warmth and light to comfort them through the long hard winters.

In the last 2 weeks I went with my camera and some fellow photographers chasing the Christmas spirit from Valkenburg in the Netherlands to Duesseldorf and then today to magical Cologne.

Lightness Of Spirit~

Everyday the world gives us so many reasons to have a heavy heart. Global warming, poverty, threats of war, cruelty, disease and most recently, vulgar and unworthy leadership.

Fighting the state of affairs with a heavy heart can only feed the cause of darkness in its attempt to veil our bright world. No. We will fight it with dance, music, art, inspiration and goodness. The darkest of nights cannot extinguish the light of one single candle.

A few hours in Cologne~

Today I drove to cologne and walked around the amazing cathedral that forces you to travel back in time to days when life was slower if not harder and simpler if not less convenient. Inside the cathedral all was calm and filled with a sense of reverence. Outside, the square was buzzing with movement, cameras clicking, laughter, bubbles and the loud silence of those who have less and sit in corners waiting for some to give. And some do give…

A symphony of symmetry, esoteric symbolism, mysterious architectural concepts, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, one of the tallest churches in the world, and most of all, a beauty to behold, this is Cologne Cathedral. An unplanned visit, guided by a charming and enthusiastic lady, this was certainly the highlight of this day.
