The complex webs we spin

Our children have this magical way of growing up without us even noticing. The greatest miracle of expansion from a little fetus to a wonderful human taking their place in the world, cannot be taken for granted. It is an amazing thing, growth. It’s a golden truth, magical in every way. It fascinates us, we gush over it and it catches us by surprise when our little baby turns 11.

Happy birthday little big girl~

Day Two Hundred Thirty Eight, September 17, 2011

Happy Birthday to today's quarter million!

After a long hot summer and a lot of traveling, the first sign that we are settled back from the holidays is a home made cake. Lea and I baked a marble cake today and then she and her friend took out all the decorations we have to create their masterpieces.

Candles were added and lit because every day more than 250,000 babies are born on our planet and it’s always someone’s birthday. Happy Birthday someone!

I am posting this also on my beautiful mother’s birthday, so Happy Birthday mom, I love you and am so glad you were born 🙂

Day One Hundred Seventy One, July 12, 2011

another year

Funny thing about living in China when it is your birthday; you celebrate it and then you are asked by a local how old you are, which you admit truthfully and try to be all graceful about the whole thing, until they ask, “is that in western years?”, “beg your pardon?” you ask, and then, just like that, they add a year to your already ancient age. Your birthday is the day you are conceived and not the day you are born, so here take 9 extra months on top!

Cheers, my friends, one day I will go back to the West and gain a year back 🙂

Day One Hundred Twenty Six, May 28, 2011

Today was a day of celebration

She woke up early on the day of her 7th birthday and ran to my bed declaring “I have dreamt that I  was being swallowed by a giant clock!”

And isn’t time like that? Isn’t it a ruthless giant clock that ticks and keeps on ticking whether we like it or not, whether we are ready or not?

I love celebrating Lea’s Birthday with her. We plan the party weeks in advance and enjoy the preparation almost as much as the event itself. She is so full of life and excitement, how can I not respond likewise and not celebrate full force?

Happy Birthday Little Lea!

Day One Hundred Twenty Two, May 24, 2011

Preparations for a glitzy birthday party!

Little girls love glitz! It is that time again! When Lea and I go a bit nuts preparing her birthday party. This year will be just as glitzy, thanks to Shanghai markets where we can find all sorts of wild props. The countdown to Saturday afternoon begins, when Lea will turn a big ‘7’ !! She is of course counting down the days and the hours and participating in every step of the planning. And the forecast for the 28th: SUNSHINE! YAY!
