A Love Letter to the Rain

Here in Germany, when it rains, the sky feels as though it leans in closer, as if to whisper, "All is well." It’s a peculiar sensation, one that dances between a gentle gloom and a quiet comfort. The rain envelopes the world, softening the edges, muting the noise, and creating a space that feels safe, almost womb-like. The streets become mirrors, reflecting the lights above in golden streaks, and if you’re prone to seeing magic, it’s all around you. It’s in the shimmer of puddles, the soft patter of drops, and the way the world slows, just a little, to take it all in.

I walked for over an hour in the rain, without an umbrella, letting the water fall freely on my skin. There’s something grounding about being in the rain, unprotected, as though it’s reminding you that you’re part of the earth, part of this eternal cycle of giving and receiving. I was grateful for the umbrellas carried by others, not to shelter me but to capture the quiet poetry of their silhouettes against the wet streets. Photographing people in the rain feels like capturing a tender moment between the individual and the elements—a meeting of the everyday and the ethereal.

I secretly love the rain. I don’t say it out loud too often, especially when the complaints about the weather seem to echo louder than the raindrops. Complaining about the rain is a national sport here, after all. But I wouldn’t trade these moments of reflection for anything. The rain is my quiet accomplice, a muse that inspires stillness and awe. So, let it pour. Let the sky and the ground meet in whispers, and let me walk through its beauty, soaking in every drop of magic it brings.

Image taken today in rainy Duesseldorf.

  1. Beautiful photo! When I worked, I hated rainy days. Dark, dismal, and damp! Now that I am retired, I love to walk in a summer rain. Everything is fresh and clean scented and enveloping. 🌦️
