A Parent’s Instinct: The Universal Call of Protection

Today, as I walked through the park, I was pulled into a scene that demanded my full attention. By the pond, loud, rhythmic quacks echoed through the air, halting passersby in their tracks. Drawn by the urgency of the calls, I saw two parent ducks leading a group of about fifteen ducklings. They moved cautiously, their tiny bodies following in a scattered but determined line.

Other birds, geese, and black-feathered intruders circled nearby, their presence triggering an immediate reaction. The male duck spread his vibrant wings wide and launched into a protective flight, circling his family. He landed with force, his stance unwavering, his presence a clear warning. The sheer intensity of the moment made it impossible to look away. The urgency, the absolute instinct to protect, rippled through the air, and those of us watching became more than just bystanders. We were drawn into the raw, universal experience of parenting—of defending, guiding, and ensuring survival.

Human parents may not ward off threats with outstretched wings, but the instinct is the same. The way we shield, nurture, and sacrifice for our children is woven into our very being. Whether through fierce protection or quiet guidance, parenting is an act of devotion beyond logic. It is an unspoken promise to guard, to teach, and to prepare our young for the unpredictable world ahead.

I left the park thinking about how witnessing something makes us part of its story. For a brief moment, everyone who stopped to watch that duck family was connected—reminded of something deep within us, something primal and essential. We are all part of this great, unfolding narrative of life, bound by instincts older than time itself.
