Today’s image is from India—a young girl balancing a heavy sack on her head, her eyes calm, her posture focused. There’s a quiet dignity in the way she moves forward, as so many children do—carrying more than what we can see. It’s a photograph that speaks to resilience, not just in her world, but in all corners of our shared planet.

I rarely watch the news. Most days, I choose to stay close to what I experience directly, through people and places I photograph. But today, I happened upon the news of the Indian Airlines crash—something about it caught and held my attention. I read more than I usually allow myself to, and I felt a weight settle in. Not just for that flight, but for everything it represents: the fragility of life, the unpredictability of our days, and the suddenness of loss.

This image, though not related, became my quiet way of standing with India. Of remembering the everyday courage that continues regardless of what the headlines say. The girl in the photograph, walking with a burden and a calm gaze, reminds me of the many who carry on in silence, all over the world.

There are hard stories unfolding in every direction, and yet, somehow, hope keeps showing up—in children’s faces, in acts of care, in our noticing. This post is just a small moment of attention sent outward, to anyone who may be struggling today. May we all find a bit of stillness, and continue to carry what we must, with as much grace as we can.

  1. Depression is so common in the “rich North”. In the countries of the “South” that I know, it is not an option. And despite the hardness of their lives there is much joy.
