 When the Sky Falls Softly~

It rained the entire day today. That kind of steady, no-nonsense rain that makes you stop and consider staying in, even if you’ve promised yourself otherwise. I hesitated. But I’ve been committed to my daily walks, so I called a friend, grabbed my camera, and headed out into the drizzle.

There’s something quietly profound about walking in the rain. It’s just water, really—falling from the sky. And yet, it changes everything. The way we look at the day, the city, the people we pass. The way the light bends and bounces off wet surfaces. Umbrellas pop attractively along the street. Colors get richer. Sounds become softer.

But more than anything, it affects how we feel. A blue sky lifts us. Rain can bring us down. Why is that? Why do our moods shift so easily with the weather? Why do we shy away from the rain when, as children, we ran straight into it, arms wide open?

Somewhere along the way, it seems we traded playfulness for practicality, spontaneity for comfort. But when I’m out with my camera, especially on days like this, I feel that old spark again. I’m watching people tuck themselves into coats, shield themselves under umbrellas, hurry home—and in between those hurried steps, something beautiful always shows up. A reflection in a puddle. A splash of color. A shared glance.

And I wonder—what if we didn’t hide? What if we let the rain touch us without resistance, just as it touches the earth? What if we remembered that we are part of nature, not separate from it?

So tonight, I say thank you, rain. For washing the city clean. For softening the edges of the day. For reminding me to walk, to see, and to feel.
