The Next Step: Walking into the Unknown

We live our lives stepping forward and upward into the unknown, never quite sure what lies ahead. Every morning, we wake up, place our feet on the ground, and move forward, often without questioning the invisible force that propels us—hope. Without hope, how would we even find the courage to take the next step? It’s woven into our existence, a quiet companion that tells us to keep going even when we don’t know where the path will lead.

And yet, we fill our days with worry. We entertain thoughts of tomorrow’s uncertainties, as though knowing the outcome would somehow bring us peace. The old wisdom says, “Live as if today were your last,” but if we truly embraced this, would we still hold space for fear? Imagine a life where worry had no weight, where each moment was experienced fully, without the need to control what comes next. It’s a radical way to live, but isn’t that what freedom really is?

Perhaps our struggle begins the moment we stop living in the present. As children, we are fully alive—playing, exploring, laughing without hesitation. But then, the world teaches us otherwise. We learn to anticipate, to plan, to measure our worth by accomplishments rather than presence. Slowly, the lightness of simply being is replaced by the burden of becoming. And yet, deep within us, that child still exists, longing for the simplicity of now.

At the end of our journey, no one wishes they had worried more or worked harder. What we long for is the feeling of having lived—of knowing we didn’t hold back, that we embraced the unknown with trust instead of fear. So, as we walk forward, let’s remind ourselves: we don’t have to see the whole path. We just need enough light for the next step.
