The Burning Ghats of Varanasi – A Dance of Life and Death

Varanasi is a place where the veil between life and death is remarkably thin. At the ghats, where the sacred Ganges meets the city’s heart, bodies burn every hour of the day, releasing souls into the cycle of rebirth. Witnessing this ancient ritual, where grief and reverence intertwine, is both surreal and grounding. The air is thick with the scent of fire and ghee, the river reflects the flickering flames, and amidst it all, life continues unabated—children play, priests chant, and families carry their loved ones to their final rest. It is a raw, unfiltered acceptance of the impermanence of existence, a stark contrast to the way many cultures shield themselves from the topic of death.

In my own family, death has often been a silent specter, an unspoken reality lurking in the shadows. I have lost loved ones too soon, and the questions around their departures have lingered without resolution. Unlike the ceremonial openness of the ghats, where the final farewell is a communal, sacred act, I grew up in an environment where death was hidden, something to be feared and grieved in solitude. The flames in Varanasi made me confront my own emotions about loss, making me wonder: why do we fear discussing something that is as natural as birth? What would it be like to truly accept that death is simply a passage rather than an end?

This experience has made me reflect on how different cultures navigate the transition from life to the unknown. In the West, death is often sanitized, pushed away into sterile hospital rooms and funeral homes, while in places like Varanasi, it is an active part of daily existence. Watching the bodies turn to ashes before my eyes, I felt a deep reverence for this ritual—a reminder that, just like the river, life moves forward, always changing, never ceasing. Perhaps there is a lesson in this for all of us: to embrace the inevitability of our own departure and to live more fully while we are still here.
