Walking into Structure and Sky~

There’s a particular rhythm to climbing stairs that seem to lead directly into the sky. At Halde Norddeutschland, the ascent begins with the Himmeltreppe—a long, steep staircase that takes you straight up the hill, cutting through the landscape with determination. With each step, the ground falls further away and the horizon opens wider. At the top, the metal structure comes into view—an outline of a house, built only of its bare essentials, a suggestion rather than a shelter.

This skeletal form, standing without walls, marks the space with deliberate contrast. It’s cold, angular, unmoving. Next to it, a single person walking seems soft and transient. I’ve visited this site three times now, and it continues to hold something quiet and magnetic. The open hilltop, the rolling terrain all around, and the way this structure rises from an industrial base to reach the open sky—it all feels intentional, and yet fluid.

Today, the air was alive. Sun and clouds danced across the sky, and birds moved freely, unbothered by the human constructs below. A falcon soared overhead, and in that moment, the hilltop felt far from the city. When we spend time in places like this, something long-forgotten in us stirs. It’s not just the view, or the sculpture—it’s the encounter with something beyond our regular shape of days.

I left with a sense of stillness and space inside. There was walking, yes, but also something more—breathing in the wind, feeling the quiet of the land, listening without needing to speak. It’s a healing that nature offers without effort.
