I remember the first time I moved from Lebanon to New York, someone casually asked if I used camels as transportation back home, along with other misinformed curiosities like whether Lebanon was an African country. The reality is, camels are nearly non-existent in Lebanon, except for a lone show camel I once saw in Baalbeck. My first real encounter with one was in 1996 in Egypt, and to my complete shock, it galloped—fast! That moment stuck with me, and since then, camels have fascinated me. Each visit to the Emirates renews my admiration for these resilient creatures, who not only survive but thrive in the desert. Their expressions are endlessly amusing, their adaptability mind-blowing, and their historical significance deeply woven into the region’s identity.
The UAE is a place where camels hold a special place in both culture and tradition. They have been indispensable companions to the Bedouins, providing transport, sustenance, and even playing a role in marriage dowries. Beyond tradition, camel racing is a highly popular sport, now using robot jockeys instead of child riders—a blend of heritage and technology. The UAE even made history in 2009 by cloning a camel named Injaz, marking a significant scientific milestone. From their ability to store 40 gallons of water to their protective triple eyelids that shield them from the sand, camels are truly engineered for the desert.
One of the things that amazes me the most is the sheer depth of their presence in Emirati culture. There are over 160 words in Arabic for "camel," a testament to their historical importance. Festivals like Al Dhafra celebrate them with beauty contests, races, and other heritage events. There’s even a Camel Museum in Dubai dedicated to educating visitors on their significance. Whether they’re showing off their quirky smiles, carrying immense loads, or simply standing tall against the desert sun, these animals are nothing short of magnificent. And every time I see one, I can’t help but be reminded of that first, wild gallop in Egypt—an exhilarating introduction to these desert royals.
