A Journey Through Culture: The Al Hosn Festival

Today at the Al Hosn Festival in Abu Dhabi, I found myself captivated by the vivid celebration of Emirati culture. The festival felt like a portal into the past, a tribute to the rich traditions that have shaped the identity of this land. One of the most mesmerizing moments for me, was witnessing the traditional hair dance performed by young Emirati girls. Their long, flowing hair spun in rhythmic harmony to the beat of tribal drums, a hypnotizing display of movement and grace. This dance, rich with symbolism, embodies the strength and beauty of Emirati women while honoring tribal history through performance. It was a living expression of the culture’s deep connection to community and storytelling.

Among the most profound cultural elements on display was the burning of incense, particularly oud, which holds immense significance in Emirati life. As I wandered through the festival, the sweet, earthy fragrance of oud smoke filled the air, creating a sensory tapestry that linked the past to the present. In Emirati culture, incense is far more than an aroma—it is a symbol of hospitality, spirituality, and respect. Traditionally burned to welcome guests, it serves as a gesture of honor and generosity. The curling smoke seemed alive, rising like a prayer, evoking a deep sense of connection to the ancestors and to the divine. It is also said to purify the space and soul, grounding people in the present moment while simultaneously honoring history.

The Al Hosn Festival revealed the beauty and depth of Emirati traditions, a culture steeped in meaning and connection. Through the rhythmic sway of the hair dance and the enchanting curl of incense smoke, I caught a glimpse of the Emirati spirit—resilient, warm, and deeply rooted in heritage. The act of burning incense, in particular, seemed to me as a bridge between the tangible and the spiritual, a practice that ties the people of the Emirates to their ancestors and to each other. It is through these traditions, both grand and subtle, that a foreign culture becomes an invitation to connect, to understand, and to celebrate the enduring richness of the human experience.
