It took me a while to return to these photographs from Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi. I went there on an assignment to document daily life, but the work affected me in ways I did not fully understand until later and in many ways this understanding is still unfolding.
What stays with me most is the extraordinary strong resilience ( I know this word is overused in this context, but wow how they own it), and strength of spirit of the people I met. In difficult circumstances, I encountered warmth, humour, creativity, pride and a powerful sense of community.
The energy of the children, the performances, the gestures of welcome and the rhythms of everyday life remain unforgettable.
Some places stay with you long after you leave. Dzaleka is one of them.
I hope to return soon.
