Day 1~ May 1st~ Cambodia

journey into the kingdom of Cambodia

A new month begins with images and stories from a land so enchanting called ‘Kampuchea’, the empire of the Khmers, the present day Kingdom of Cambodia, the land of the worshipers of Theravada Buddhism, of hill tribes, of stilt houses and of magical ancient temples. It is a place where mystery is alive and well and where today’s generation struggles to overcome the bloody history of its parents and grandparents, poverty, and social injustice to become once again the kingdom it deserves to be.

It gives me so much joy to dive back into this archive, and I hope that you will enjoy contemplating it with me through 31 images and not too many words.

      1. Last time I was there was winter 2010/2011…Had an extended dirt-motorbike journey covering most of the country…..Without doubt one of my all-time travel high-lights…I will definitely go back in the next few years to spend more time photographing the country..because of the bike scenario my photo opportunities were more limited than I would have liked.
What a beautiful country and what marvellous people.

  8. It’s like a spectacle of incredible art and the result of nature breeding with a man made structure. Awesome! My heart longs to visit such places

    1. Yes, I love how these trees reclaim nature so dramatically. I hope you will go there one day Scott, it is breathtaking!

  9. A great shot and angle, because it really captures the essence of Cambodia. In late-1990s, I actually spent about 4 days in the capital, Phnom Pen, which was a “really” different experience for me. Otherwise, I look forward, as always, to seeing your other photographs of Cambodia. 🙂

  12. I don’t know why but Ancient Cambodian and Ancient Mayan architecture makes me wonder if they are somehow interconnected. Maybe it is simply the detailed stonework and the forest trying to reclaim both of these architectures and cultures. Thank you in advance for sharing these. I am lookiing forward to it.

    1. I have had many similar thoughts Wally, also in connection to Egypt and the parallel of pyramid structures. So very interesting
