Day 14~ February 14th~ Lebanon

silenced

I was often asked after leaving Lebanon for good: “if you love it so much, why did you leave it?”, “if it is that beautiful why aren’t you there?”

But when I remember what drove me out, it was not really the war, not the seeking of adventure, not my love for travel, no, it was something much simpler than that.

I could never be ‘me’ in my home country. It is a society that allows you to speak as long as what you say conforms to popular opinion. It lets you do as long as you do what is politically correct. What drove me out was my search for truth and my strong longing to be myself, to be true to who I am and to find out who I was. And who can do that except under the wings of freedom? How can you find yourself if you are imprisoned in dogma?

And still, years later, if you ask me where I wish to grow old, I would answer: ” Lebanon, where else?”

  1. So true. I returned to lebanon after 20 years of absence, and this is my 12th year in lebanon, and I know without a shadow of a doubt that I do not belong here, and I cannot make friends, and I never had a steady friend… Just living here, no real troubles to deal with, the land of total chaos, too much freedom and no democracy…Ideal for the anarchists to talk and never act…

  2. Beautiful capture. The first thought that came to mind was a reminder of the Shroud of Turin.

  3. I like the content of the post more than the picture.

  4. Powerful pic.

    1. Thank you!

  5. Wow, this is strong stuff, Mimo! The photo is absolutely first rate, mono is exactly the medium for it, and it goes with your words >>>perfectly.

And boy, do I agree with your words one hundred percent! Isn’t it sad to think that, in many places, thousands of years of civilisation have culminated in dogma and political correctness, with a great fear of anyone speaking out about their true feelings? I feel for your dilemma! Adrian

    1. Very well put! Thank you for your contribution Adrian!

  6. Concept is great… What you thought in was the real. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you Aymen!

  7. The picture, the words, the reflection = a great post.

    1. Thank you so much!

  8. I think the shot is perfect…really makes you feel the words.

    1. many thanks!

  9. Lebanon’s a wonderful place but with real problems and I think your image sums it up beautifully. Growing old there would be fantastic I think – as long as it sorts out its issues…

    1. Yes, let’s see 🙂

  10. Your words are so true! Your image is spot on for the theme of your words. Freedom to be all you can be is everything!

    1. It is! Thank you for your comment:)

  11. I like the focus being on the grid…after all, that’s pretty much the point of the shot.

    1. It is the concept of the shot, true! Thank you Stuart!

  12. Probably auto focus on the grid. A DOF partially on the man and the grid would I think give a stronger picture.

Very nice pictures on Lebanon so far!

    1. Thank you Bernard! I appreciate your constructive criticism!
